My Least Favorite Person In Sports, USC Title Hopes

By Fireman Mike June 23, 2009

Your love and knowledge of USC is obvious, how good are they this year? Jim, Santa Monica

peteuscToo many road games against 8-9 win teams with an unproven quarterback probably means 12-0 is out of the question. Yet, they could still be a darkhorse for the National Championship. They return the bulk of their offensive home run hitters. The offensive line and secondary units are among the nation’s best and Pete Carroll always has the Trojans ready for big games. The key will be how quickly USC coaches get the quarterback position up to speed. I’m told they may start a freshman, super recruit Matt Barkley, by games 2 or three.

Who is the sexiest female athlete today? Eric, Eugene

I generally like to keep my sex and sports separate. In fact, I’ve never dated a gal who enjoys sports on TV. A few years ago, back in Vegas, I was at a tennis press conference. Maybe it was Tampa, I can’t recall. Anyway, Anna Kournikova arrived in a tight pink sweat suit. Um, let’s just say I think I mumbled a question to her as I slobbered on my microphone.

Who is your least favorite person in sports? Dawn, Baltimore

bknightBobby Knight and it’s not even close. He’s the biggest hypocrite in my lifetime. He demands composure from his players, yet has none. He demands a level head from players, yet lacks one. He demanded commitment and loyalty, yet bailed on Texas Tech during a season. He was frequently on hunting trips and couldn’t be found during the offseason by his players. This comes straight from a player’s mouth. He’s a total control freak, who leans on ESPN’S fawning college basketball analysts whenever he’s in peril.

Are you ever going to marry again? I’ve got an adorable daughter. Love the site. William, Boise

Doubtful. I’m just too busy with my kids and career. I love both dearly therefore I could never give a woman the attention that most need. Maybe when I’m old and slow down. My life today feels like the Daytona 500, and I’m just not ready for an extended pit stop.

Do you even like baseball? You bash it almost every day. Chad, Cincinnati

seligActually baseball has allowed me, maybe forced me, to follow only about five teams. Therefore, those are the ones I like; the Red Sox, Yanks, Dodgers, Cubs and my hometown Mariners. When you combine MLB’s lack of promotion, and ESPN’S understandable major market approach to coverage, how could I possibly be emotionally vested to all but about five teams? Don’t you love the Reds? Why? I imagine it’s because you’re watching them more regularly than other teams, so you become emotionally close to that team. Same goes for me. Why wouldn’t I love the Yankees? It’s all I ever see on TV.
