Overrated Coaches And Seattle SPorts Issues
ByWho are the most overrated coaches in all of football? Dave, Chicago
That’s a tough question Dave. Overrated means someone thinks they are really good, maybe even me, and just isn’t as elite as their reputation. At the college level, Steve Spurrier has never put in the hours of his contemporaries. His bowl record is so-so, and frankly his clever offenses seem pedestrian these days. I would also throw Missouri’s Gary Pinkel in this group. He rebuilds programs, but it takes years. If you eliminate one player, Chase Daniels, from his Missouri tenure, how spectacular is it? In the NFL, Tony Dungy was good, but how many other coaches with Peyton Manning wouldn’t win big? Plus the Colts entire organization is ahead of the NFL curve. They are the best first round drafting team, arguably, in the last twenty years. Jon Gruden is sharp, but some of his drafts were weak, and he can’t make up his mind on quarterbacks. He seems to burn them out.
Who is the most underrated NFL player? Jake, San Diego
I’ve been saying this for years Jake, and here I go again. Jeff Garcia is number one. He’s mobile, smart, accurate and able to ad lib or run a complex West Coast offense. I can’t figure out, what’s not to like? He’s not Steve Young, but a reasonable facsimile. All that said, he bounces around like a bad check.
Dude, I’m getting married in September. Do you have any suggestions on the wedding? Reece, Oklahoma
Two words: Open. Bar. That will virtually guarantee a good time. Keep the ceremony short and sweet. The last wedding I went to was a snooze. No cocktails and too long. Seems to be a good wedding should be like a good party; inclusive, sexy, fun, with good music. Don’t let your wife control everything, or it will become overly sentimental and costly. Keep things tight and light. Now if you also want to know about divorce in a few years, I’m probably more of an expert on that.
You’re from Seatttle, but not a fan of Griffey or Ichiro? What gives? Ken, Tacoma
I loved Griffey in his prime. But in typical Seattle sports fashion, he was brought back to sell jerseys, not to win games.
Ichiro is a tremendous leadoff hitter, but you shouldn’t build your team around him. Legitimate baseball franchises don’t build rosters around 176-pound singles hitters. Seattle acts like they care, but they don’t. Sports are just something to be involved in, to make them feel like a major city. But there’s very little passion for it or expertise in it. Once again, that’s Seattle sports. If I didn’t care about the city, I would never talk about them like we do say, Kansas City. But I grew up there and it aggravates the hell out of me that I’ve never had a thing to be proud of when it comes to sports.
