USA Blows Two Goal Lead, Loses To Brazil In Championship

By Fireman Mike June 29, 2009

thowardThe USA men’s soccer team had its second opportunity in the last week to make a statement on the world scene. After building a 2-goal lead, the Americans came back down to Earth. Brazil pushed across three goals, were robbed of a fourth by a tough call and dominated the game from the second half on.

Even with a loss, some American fans would argue that a bridge has been crossed. American soccer had one of it’s finest weeks ever and was able to hold the attention of the average sports fan, even if it was only for a day or two. American Soccer Fan also believes that the sport is one star away from overtaking football as the dominate sport in the country, so we have to be careful who fills our minds and our airwaves this week.

cornAmerican soccer is a lot like corn on the cob. If you have it at the weekend BBQ, you tell yourself, “Man, this was great. I’m going to grab some more this week and make it with every meal I have.” But after you leave the party, three things will happen.

— You’ll forget about the corn on the cob, but still stay full from the steak (football).

— You might get it on your next trip to the grocery store but you’ll realize that it didn’t taste as good as it did at the party, the first time you had it.

— You’ll wake up the next morning, go to the bathroom and realize what a waste of time it was to eat those four pieces of corn on the cob and never eat it again, until the next big BBQ.

American soccer has a long way to go in this country. Watching the two best teams or players do anything is fantastic. Nadal-Federer is some of the best television money can buy. But after watching the second half of the America-Brazil game you realize, we are far from the top of this sport.
