SEC’s Top Ten NFL Prospects

By Fireman Mike September 1, 2009

This list doesn’t include players from the University of Florida, whose football factory warranted their own list. Alabama could have had their own list too, but didn’t have the overwhelming depth that the Gators feature. Even without Florida’s prospects, the SEC has some of the most dynamic football players in the college game. Here they are:

1. Julio Jones 6′5″ 215 WR Alabama Sophomore

jjonesJulio Jones is one the most athletic wide receiver in college football and probably one of the top five most athletic receivers at any level of football right now. He can blow by any opposing corner with his 4.4 speed. He can jump over every defensive back on the field with his 44 inch vertical. He catches everything thrown his way and is becoming a more complete player every day. Jones is going to be a nightmare for 31 NFL teams and a fantasy for one. He is the next Randy Moss. Jones should be a top three in the 2011 NFL Draft.

2. Eric Berry 5′11″ 205 SS Tennessee Junior

berry2Berry enters his junior season 15 yards shy of former FSU star Terrell Buckley’s NCAA record for interception return yards in a career. Constantly around the ball, Berry makes quarterbacks feel his presence with an uncanny ability to make the big play. He was the nation’s top defensive back coming out of high school and still holds that title going into his junior season. He is a guaranteed top five pick whenever he decides to enter the NFL Draft.

3. Jevan Snead 6′3″ 220 QB Mississippi Junior

sneadAfter he got beat out for the starting quarterback spot at Texas as a freshman, it was questionable what Jevan Snead’s path would be and how he would be defined. Three years later, the questions have been answered and Snead has put himself in the position to be the first quarterback taken in the 2011 or 2012 NFL Draft. He can make every throw and is mobile enough to avoid pressure in the pocket. He is a tremendous leader and has the guts of a burglar. He’ll be a top ten pick in one of the next two NFL Drafts.

4. Greg Hardy 6′5″ 275 DE Mississippi Senior

Even though Hardy was slowed by injuries last season, he made a tremendous impact on the SEC and put himself on the top of every NFL scouts’ list of emerging defensive ends. He is proficient at getting to the quarterback but is at his best when he strings plays out and drops running backs for a loss. His best football is probably three or four years down the road which will entice NFL executives around the league. He’ll be a high first round pick in 2010.

5. A.J. Green 6′4″ 215 WR Georgia Sophomore

green2If it wasn’t for Julio Jones, the nation would have been screaming the name ‘AJ Green’ all of last year. He stepped up for the Bulldogs and gave Matt Stafford a reliable number one target as a true freshman. He gained weight, grew an inch and improved on every aspect of his receiving game in the offseason and is primed to push Jones for the title of ‘Best Receiver in the 2012 Class” during his sophomore year. Green will benefit from chasing Jones over the next two seasons and it will help him to become a very wealthy NFL receiver.

6. Terrence Cody 6′5″ 365 DT Alabama Senior

‘Mount Cody’ is one of the most physically imposing players in college football. He gets off the ball with surprising quickness and his explosiveness allows him to plug holes that were once open. He demands constant double teams and could be the keystone in an NFL defense some day. His production this season will be the key to his draft status but he projects as a mid-first round pick already.

7. Chad Jones 6′3″ 230 FS LSU Junior

chadjonesChad Jones is one of the hardest hitters in college football. Ironically, he hates hitter in the spring. He’s one of the most sensational pitchers in college baseball, blowing 94mph fastballs right past guys on the way to winning the College World Series last spring. On the football field, Les Miles has a weapon that can change a game at any point. He uses his 4.5 speed to cover the field from sideline to sideline. Do yourself a favor this year when LSU is on television. Watch #3. That’s exactly what NFL front office-types are going to do and it will lead one of them making Jones their first round pick in 2011. It will be interesting to see what MLB teams do to lure him away from the gridiron next season.

8. Rolando McClain 6′4″ 260 LB Alabama Junior

mcclainMcClain is one of the best linebackers in the country and has the potential to become one of the most dynamic defensive players in all of college football in 2009. The Alabama defense revolves around McClain’s ability to cover the entire field. His defensive coordinator can take more chances with a dominate player like McClain in the middle. NFL scouts love his tenacity and it will land him in the first round in 2011.

9. Ciron Black 6′5″ 325 OT LSU Senior

Black will end his LSU playing days as a four-year starter for one of the nation’s most prolific programs. He shows great footwork and hands, but his power and length are the tools that make him such an intriguing prospect. He is as adept at pass blocking as he is for the run. LSU’s pro style offense will give NFL scouts a realistic look at what Black brings to the table.

10. Trevard Lindley 6′ 180 CB Kentucky Senior

Lindley has some of the best cover skills in the country and the potential to be a shut down corner in the NFL. SEC teams can avoid him this season and attempt to pick on the weakside corner, but NFL scouts will get enough of a look at him against the league’s top teams  in order make a decision on his draft status. He will also be a Combine star which always helps. There is always a demand for good starting corners in the NFL so don’t be surprised when Lindley goes in the first round.

Good list and affirms the talent level in the SEC.

FYI - Rennie Curran plays for UGA, not Alabama.

Geno Atkins, DT UGA, is someone that should be considered.
