The Herd’s Word Preseason All-American Team
ByThe Offense
.
Quarterback - Colt McCoy, Texas
The senior has the most to prove this season and we think he will. Big time. He’s the only one of the big three not to win the Heisman or a National Championship, the two defining awards for a great college football player. He might get both this season. Honorable Mention: Tim Tebow (Florida), Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Dan LeFevour (Central Mich)
Running Back - Jahvid Best, Cal
The most complete running back in the nation. Don’t be surprised when he goes over 2,000 yards this season. Every coach in the PAC-10 knows about him and soon every defensive coordinator in the NFL will too. Honorable Mention: Jonathon Dwyer (Georgia Tech), C.J. Spiller (Clemson), Toby Gerhart (Stanford)
Running Back - Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon State
The little guy can scoot. He was the man who single-handedly knocked the USC Trojans off their championship horse last season. He dominated a USC defense that was thought of as one of the greatest of all time. Quizz wasn’t impressed. Honorable Mention: Kendall Hunter (Oklahoma State), Noel Devine (West Virginia), Evan Royster (Penn State)
Wide Receiver - Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State
There are rumors circling around OSU that Dez Bryant can fly. I’ve seen him leave Earth for a prolonged period of time, grab a football and come down in a far different place, so I can’t argue with those people. Dude’s a beast. Honorable Mention: Damian Williams (USC), Dez Briscoe (Kansas), DeAndre Brown (Southern Miss)
Wide Receiver - Julio Jones, Alabama
The next Randy Moss. He was real good as a true freshman last season but look for Jones to break the SEC’s heart in 2009. He does things that no other receiver in the world can do. Greg McElroy, you better get him the damn ball! Honorable Mention: Jordan Shipley (Texas), AJ Green (Georgia), Mardy Gilyard (Cincy)
Wide Receiver - Arrelious Benn, Illinois
Benn is one of the few athletes in the Big Ten that would dominate in the SEC. He forms the best QB-WR combo in the conference with Juice Williams and their relationship will go a long way in making Benn an All-American. Honorable Mention: Eric Decker (Minnesota), Golden Tate (Notre Dame), Mark Dell (Michigan State)
Tight End - Aaron Hernandez, Florida
A lot of people are wondering who is going to replace Percy Harvin as the game-breaker for Florida. You don’t have to look any further than Hernandez who is going to become a star by mid-season. His best games have come against FSU, Miami, Alabama in the SEC title game and Oklahoma in the BCS championship game. Playas show up when the lights go on. Honorable Mention: Jermaine Gresham (Oklahoma), Rob Gronkowski (Arizona), Ed Dickson (Oregon)
O-Line - Bryan Bulaga, Iowa
Get used to hearing his name and cross your fingers that he’s still on the board when your favorite NFL team makes their choice in one of the next two Drafts. Bulaga is the best player on an Iowa team that is loaded with NFL talent. Honorable Mention: Ciron Black (LSU), John Jerry (Ole Mis)
O-Line - Trent Williams, Oklahoma
If you wonder why it seems like Sam Bradford is sipping on a cocktail in the shade while looking for an open receiver in the pocket, it’s because Trent Williams is containing his man and blocking the sun. Honorable Mention: Rodney Hudson (FSU), Bruce Campbell (Maryland)
O-Line - Kristofer O’Dowd, USC
He’s been a starter since he stepped foot on campus and is the best center in the country, hands down. Powerful, explosive and great footwork at USC equals two commas in your first pay check as a pro. Honorable Mention: Stefen Wisniewski (Penn State), John Moffitt (Wisconsin)
O-Line - Anthony Davis, Rutgers
Greg Schiano has one of the best linemen in the nation on his hands and you better believe the Scarlet Knights will be running behind Davis all season long en route to a Big East championship. Honorable Mention: Maurkice Pouncey (Florida), Selvish Capers (West Virginia)
O-Line - Russell Okung, Oklahoma State
There’s a reason why the Cowboys explosive offense has the time to let plays develop and mercilessly pound their opponents into submission. His name is Russell Okung. He anchors the OSU line and lets his stars shine. Honorable Mention: Sam Young (Notre Dame), Adam Ulatoski (Texas)
