Stock Up, Stock Down - College Football Week 2
ByStock Up
Non-BCS Football Programs - Boise State took Oregon behind the woodshed. Houston showed Oklahoma State that they weren’t impressed with their victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. TCU and Utah are slowly climbing up the top 25 rankings and Brigham Young pulled off the biggest upset of the early season by physically pounding Oklahoma. A small part of us hopes BYU goes undefeated and forces the hand of the coaches, media and the computers because they will truly deserve a shot at the BCS title.
Rich Rodriguez - He handled his recent practice time drama with a lot of class and compassion. Then he went out and handled the Fighting Irish with speed and power. It helped that Tate Forcier played like a fifth-year senior but Rich-Rod was the man who brought him in and installed the offense. His seat should have a little less heat for the next few weeks.
Dan LeFevour - The senior from Central Michigan led his team to a 29-27 victory over Michigan State. He also broke Byron Leftwich’s MAC record for most total yards with 12,166 in his career. LeFevour isn’t just a stat compiler though. He has legit size and a fantastic arm which will translate well into the NFL. For now, LeFevour will keep trying to gain respect for the Michigan school that has credited him with their tuition and enrollment increase over the last three years.
Stock Down
ACC-Big Ten Football - It has become almost painful to watch the mid to lower tier teams in these BCS conferences. Duke and Virginia lost to 1-AA schools in week 1 and Maryland needed overtime to avoid the same fate. Michigan State, who was expected to contend for the Big Ten title, got beat by Central Michigan and Northern Iowa pushed Iowa to the brink. Florida State came back from a great game against Miami and almost lost to Jacksonville State. To think Miami-Ohio State was one of the best National Championship games in the last decade is almost unbelievable.
Chip Kelly - Oregon followed up a beating at the hands of Boise State with a two-point victory over Purdue. Kelly also had to deal with LaGarrette Blount’s punch and people questioning whether or not he had total control over his team. Now the Ducks have to deal with back-to-back games against Utah and California. They get them at home but that
hasn’t meant much recently. If Kelly doesn’t change the perception of his program in the next two weeks, it could be a long season for the Ducks.
Jimmy Clausen - Those smug looks toward the opposing sideline look tough when they are directed Hawaii and Nevada. But he’s usually looking over to the opposing sidelines from his back or looking down in embarrassment when he faces a formidable opponent. Notre Dame’s decision to rely on the Hail Mary throughout the game finally caught up with them in the fourth quarter and Clausen couldn’t complete a pass to put the game away.
